If you're like many stitchers, you probably like needle minders. One might say it's an addiction, but hey... we're not getting into the details here. Instead of starting a 12-step program to cure your needle minder obsession, try this DIY solution that lets you satisfy that craving while giving new life to forgotten treasures hiding in your craft room.
If you're anything like me, you've accumulated a random collection of pins over the years. Maybe you picked up a souvenir pin at a special event, received promotional pins you'll never wear, or held onto sentimental pins that no longer serve their original purpose. These little metal treasures are just sitting in a drawer or cup somewhere, waiting for their moment to shine.
I'm going to show you how to transform those forgotten pins into functional, personalized needle minders that you'll actually use in your stitching projects.

Why Make Your Own Needle Minders?
Let's talk about why this project is worth your time. First, it's incredibly budget-friendly. Commercial needle minders can range anywhere from $15 to $20 or more, especially for designer or limited-edition versions. If you're on a budget, making your own from materials you might already have is a great option.
Second, it's a fantastic way to repurpose items that hold sentimental value. That pin from your favorite concert, a meaningful trip, or a special milestone? Now it can accompany you on every stitching journey. Plus, you'll have truly one-of-a-kind needle minders that reflect your personal style and interests. No one else at your stitching club will have the same designs as you!
What You'll Need
The beauty of this project is its simplicity. You probably have most of these supplies already, and anything you're missing can be picked up for just a few dollars. Here's your shopping list:
Metal pins: The stars of our show. These need to be metal (magnets won't stick to plastic or fabric pins) and ones you're willing to permanently transform. Raid your collection for pins that no longer serve their original purpose: promotional pins, old souvenir pins, lapel pins you never wear, or even damaged pins that still have intact front designs.
Wire cutters: A basic pair of wire cutters or jewelry pliers will do the trick. You'll use these to remove the pin backing, and trust me, this step is easier than you think.
Small magnets: I recommend small magnets between 10 and 20mm, which you can easily find on Amazon or at craft stores. You can go slightly bigger if you prefer, but avoid going too small. If you use magnets under 10mm, you'll likely need more than one, which can make the process more difficult. In addition, smaller magnets may not provide enough holding power for your needles. You'll need two magnets per needle minder: one for the back of your pin and one to place on your fabric while stitching.
Strong adhesive: A good craft glue or super glue works perfectly. My favorite is e6000 glue. You want something that will create a permanent bond between your magnet and the pin back.

Step-by-Step DIY Needleminder Process
Now for the fun part! This project is so straightforward that you'll probably make your entire pin collection into needle minders in one satisfying afternoon.
Step 1: Remove the Pin Back
Pick up one of your metal pins and flip it over. You'll see the pin clasp mechanism on the back that we need to remove. Take your wire cutters and position them as close to the base of the pin as possible. Give them a firm squeeze, and the pin part will snap right off.

Don't worry if you're not getting a perfectly flush cut, because we're going to cover that up in the next step. You'll be left with a small protruding nub where the pin used to be attached, and that's completely fine.
Optional step: There will be a few small, sharp areas on the back of the pin from where you cut it. If you want it smoother before adding your magnet, you can file it down with a metal nail file or a Dremel tool.
Step 2: Apply Your First Magnet
Here's where we get a little generous with the glue, and I'll tell you why. We're going to use the glue to attach the magnet and cover up that sharp or pokey bit left over from removing the pin back. Apply a healthy dollop of glue to the back of your pin, making sure to cover the entire area where you'll place the magnet, including that little leftover nub. Place one of your magnets onto the glue, positioning it to best cover the pokey part.
Step 3: Add Extra Security
Here's my pro tip: add a little more glue around the edges of the magnet once it's in place. This serves two purposes. First, it ensures a super-strong bond that will last through countless stitching sessions. Second, and perhaps more importantly, it creates a smooth barrier so you don't have any sharp edges left over from the area we cut that could snag your fabric or poke your fingers. It doesn't have to be perfectly neat, but don't cover up your magnet with too much glue. Function over perfection, my friends!

Step 4: The Waiting Game
The longest, but easiest, part is waiting for the glue to dry. Depending on your adhesive, this could take anywhere from a few hours to overnight. Set your pieces aside in a safe spot where they won't be disturbed. This is a great time to batch your project: prepare several needle minders at once so you can maximize your crafting efficiency.
Step 5: Test and Use
Once everything is completely dry, it's time for the big moment! Take your second magnet (remember, you need two magnets per needle minder) and place it on your canvas or stitching project where you want to position your needle minder. Then, place your newly created needle minder on top, and the magnets will connect through your fabric.

The pin design will face up, looking adorable on your project, while the magnet on the back holds everything securely in place. Thread your needle, stick it to your new needle minder, and voila! You've got a functional, personalized tool that will keep your needle safe while you're taking breaks from stitching.
Tips for Success
Magnet strength matters - If you're working with heavier pins or thicker fabrics, you might want to invest in slightly stronger magnets to ensure a secure hold.
Batch process for efficiency - Since you're waiting for glue to dry anyway, prepare several needle minders at once. Set up an assembly line and knock out your whole collection in one session.
Get creative with your pin selection - Don't limit yourself to traditional lapel pins. Small brooches, vintage pins, fandom pins, or even broken jewelry pieces with flat backs can work beautifully.
Make them as gifts - These personalized needle minders make wonderful gifts for your stitching friends. Tailor the pin choice to their interests, and you've got a thoughtful, handmade present that any crafter will appreciate.
The Joy of Personalization
What I love most about this project is how it transforms forgotten objects into functional tools that bring joy to your creative practice. Every time you sit down to stitch, you'll see these little reminders of memories, interests, or moments in time. That pin from a concert you loved? Now it keeps you company during quiet stitching evenings. The souvenir from a meaningful trip? It's part of your creative journey now.
So go ahead—raid that drawer of random pins. Give them new purpose. Feed your needle minder addiction guilt-free. And most importantly, enjoy the satisfaction of creating something useful with your own hands.
Happy stitching, and happy making!
